Efibre.ie Transferred to Eircom in Domain Dispute

Several months ago Eircom, one of Ireland’s largest ISPs,  launched a fibre broadband product under the moniker of “eFibre”.

For some reason, however, they hadn’t registered the corresponding domain name.

One of their competitors Magnet had and setup a very simple site:

Magnet's eFibre Site

I’m not sure how many people noticed, though I did see a tweet about it at the time:

Well Eircom obviously didn’t see the funny side of the situation and initiated a dispute via WIPO, who handle domain disputes for .ie domain names.

The decision, which was in Eircom’s favour, was given back in October.

You can read the full decision here. The decision is quite interesting as it reveals that Eircom has committed over 3.2 million Euro to marketing their eFibre service.

Not surprisingly the domain was transferred to Eircom and it now points to the broadband section of their site.
