The next public ICANN meeting is being held in Marrakech early next month.
I’ll be attending, so I thought I’d check with my mobile phone company about their roaming rates for both voice and data. I’ve also seen several colleagues from the ICANN community posting about the rates their providers are quoting. Short version – it’s not cheap! (The mobile phone company we use doesn’t seem to even have a roaming agreement for data)
So the simplest solution is to get a SIM card from a local provider.
In Morocco there are several mobile phone companies and most offer a variety of pre-paid SIM options:
All three providers offer a variety of plans, though my local contact recommends Maroc Telecom for 3G/ 4G. (I usually use data more than voice and switching phone numbers around isn’t something I’ll do generally)
Checking their rates they appear very competitive compared to Europe and apparently a SIM is only a couple of Euro.
You should be able to buy SIM cards at the airport or in one of their dealers in the city.
Thanks to Hamza for the local information!
