EURid, who run the .eu domain name registry, have been having issues over the last few days which are the result of a number of denial of service attacks.
The registry’s services were degraded from the morning of Friday 24th April through until Monday.
Services returned to normal, but unfortunately it looks like either the attackers have started up again or there is a completely new attack ongoing.
At present the registry’s websites and services appear to be online and their main site is being protected behind Cloudflare.
EURid operates several public facing websites including their main corporate one, a registrant extranet, a registrar extranet and some sites for activities like the Web Awards. They’d also have EPP servers, whois servers and of course DNS infrastructure.
Distributed Denial of Service (DDOS) attacks are, unfortunately, very common. In some cases they are purely a nuisance, while in others the attackers will demand payment of some kind.
In common with most larger domain registries EURid would have robust technical infrastructure, so while it is possible that an attack could impact a public website the underlying technical infrastructure such as the DNS itself is less likely to have been adversely impacted.
