Indian Domain Registry to Offer 30 More Extensions

NIXI, who run the .in domain name registry, have announced that they’re adding 30 more domain zones or extensions to their offering.

At present you can choose to register a domain directly under .in, such as $company.in, while you can also opt for org.in, co.in, net.in, firm.in, ind.in and gen.in if you want.

From October 30th there will be an additional 30 extensions to choose from:

  • 5g.in
  • 6g.in
  • Ahmdabad.in
  • Ai.in
  • Am.in
  • Bihar.in
  • Biz.in
  • Business.in
  • Ca.in
  • Cn.in
  • Com.in
  • Coop.in
  • Cs.in
  • Delhi.in
  • Dr.in
  • Er.in
  • Gujarat.in
  • Info.in
  • Int.in
  • Internet.in
  • Io.in
  • Me.in
  • Pg.in
  • Post.in
  • Pro.in
  • Travel.in
  • Tv.in
  • Uk.in
  • Up.in
  • Us.in

Why?

I’ve absolutely no idea. They claim that it’s to provider greater choice, but will it? I suspect that these new additions won’t be a roaring success, but maybe I’m a little pessimistic?

What does pique my curiosity however is how the registry managed to keep or clawback some of the domains for this. The list includes what would definitely be premium names like travel.in and business.in, as well as two character names.

There are currently just under 3 million .in domain names.

  1. Weird.
I suspect they could earn a lot more by simply selling some of those names.
Seeing how platforms are widely used in the region, you’d think some e.g. business.in would be ripe for that sort of model.
