This year Nominet’s non-executive director election is for one seat on the board. For reasons that aren’t 100% clear the announcement of the candidates took quite a bit longer than normal, with the list only being made official in the last week.
So who is running for election this time round?
- Jim Davies
- Volker Greimann
- Kieren McCarthy
While anyone can be nominated to the Board, only Nominet members can vote in the election. Voting will open on September 12th.
Both Davies and McCarthy have published statements on their respective websites outlining why they’re running for election. Both have, understandably, taken a rather dim view of how Nominet handled the acquisition and subsequent sale of cybersecurity company CyGlass. As was recently revealed to Nominet members and the wider public, the failed investment cost Nominet millions of pounds.
Historically the voter turnout for Nominet elections isn’t very high, though the CyGlass scandal might encourage some members who don’t normally exercise their vote to do so. Either way we’ll know the outcome in a few weeks.
Disclosure: I nominated two of the candidates this year both Volker Greimann and Kieren McCarthy. They’re two very different candidates and would bring very different perspectives, but for members to be able to make that choice candidates need to get on the ballot, which is why I’d no qualms in nominating both of them.
