The .eu registry is phasing out Greek mixed script registrations, as there’s now a specific domain extension for Greek script. If you want to register a domain using Greek then there’s the .ευ which is specifically designed to serve Greek.greek domains. They reminded registrars of this phase out recently:
From 14 November 2022, only Greek domain names with the Greek .ευ extension (Greek.Greek) will remain registered.
In order to avoid an interruption in their web presence as of 14 November 2022, registrants should only use their Greek.Greek domain name. Please follow up with your impacted registrants on the matter.
Background information: Our .ευ guidelines explain in detail the cloning of Greek .eu domain names to .ευ, which took place on 14 November 2019. As part of that process, a three-year script adjustment phase was launched, which allowed for both Greek .eu domain names and their clones in .ευ to coexist for a period of three years, ending on 13 November 2022.
The phase-out of Greek domain names with the Latin .eu extension is being done to follow the ‘no script mixing’ best practice for Internationalised Domain Names. The objective of the ‘no script mixing’ best practice is to avoid confusion about domain names that look similar.
EURid’s approach is not unique. Other registries that have introduced IDN specific extensions also follow a “no mixed scripts” policy.
