I wasn't sure who was going to be happy about the new RAA docs that were published last night. I guess I now have the answer - Telesign. Telesign have been trying to get "in" with registrars over the last couple of years but their sales tactics are quite lacking. Today's missive arrived in my inbox with the subject line: Registrar Accreditation Agreement Limited … [Read more...] about Telesign Use New RAA Update To Spam Registrars

RAA Negotiations Update – Is Anyone Going To Be Happy?
I cannot write impartially or objectively about the RAA (Registrar Accreditation Agreement - the contract between ICANN and its registrars). It would be disingenuous of me to even try to do so. I run a registrar so any changes to the RAA will have a direct and tangible impact on me, my staff and my clients. In relation to this I posted at length on the company blog a few … [Read more...] about RAA Negotiations Update – Is Anyone Going To Be Happy?
.Be Registry Offering Registrants Certificates
DNS.be, the organisation that runs the .be registry, recently upgraded their software backend to add some new features. While most upgrades usually only impact registrars, the latest update includes an interesting new feature for registrants - registration certificates. While this isn't a completely novel idea (a number of other ccTLDs offer it) it's a nice little … [Read more...] about .Be Registry Offering Registrants Certificates
UK Domain Names Now Available For 1 to 10 Year Registration and Renewal
Nominet turned on multi-year registrations and renewals today, so now UK domain names can be registered or renewed for periods from 1 to 10 years. With this move Nominet brings itself into line with gTLDs and a lot of other ccTLDs, where the 1 to 10 year registration period has been available for some time. As a registrar and registrant I'm delighted by this move. It also … [Read more...] about UK Domain Names Now Available For 1 to 10 Year Registration and Renewal
Nominet Breaks 10 Million Domains
Nominet, the .uk registry, announced yesterday that they'd broken the 10 million domains mark. The .uk registry is currently the 2nd largest country code extension in the world. Interestingly there were over 2 million domain names registered in each of the last two years and the renewal rate stands at around 70%. Later this year the registry will be introducing multi-year … [Read more...] about Nominet Breaks 10 Million Domains
DotPro Registry Migrating To Afilias Backend
The .pro registry will be migrating to the Afilias EPP system in June 2012. The move is hardly surprising, as the .pro registry was acquired by Afilias early this year. What impact will this have on registrants? Pretty much none. Registrars, however, will need to re-integrate their backend systems with the registry and unfortunately their existing connections with … [Read more...] about DotPro Registry Migrating To Afilias Backend
Irish Country Code High Risk For Business
If you're going to choose a country code for your business you might want to think long and hard about choosing the .ie ccTLD. Why? Because if you reorganise your business you might end up losing your domain. In several recent cases the IEDR have flatly refused to update the registrant details on domain names citing registry rules that were never applied to the initial … [Read more...] about Irish Country Code High Risk For Business
Nominet Non-Executive Board Election 2012
Nominet's board elections for 2012 are kicking off today. Up for grabs are two non-executive board posts, though both of the current board members whose seats are being vacated are also standing for re-election. The timeline is pretty simple: Nominations open - 5 March Closing date for nominations - 19 March, 12.00 noon Voting commences - 16 April Voting closes … [Read more...] about Nominet Non-Executive Board Election 2012
Nominet Publish Draft Member Code
Nominet, the domain registry for the .uk ccTLD, has published a draft "member code". Nominet's structure means that its registrars are also "members" of the organisation, so this move is quite an interesting one. You can read the draft text on the Nominet site here. From an initial reading the "code" appears to be quite "light" and doesn't impose any onerous obligations … [Read more...] about Nominet Publish Draft Member Code
Afilias Acquires .Pro
Afilias has acquired .pro (RegistryPro) I assume they'll move the registry backend to the Afilias system at some point, though managing that transition is going to be awkward. Here's the release: DUBLIN, Jan 17, 2012 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Afilias Limited, the ICANN-designated registry operator for the .INFO top level domain (TLD) and a global provider of domain registry … [Read more...] about Afilias Acquires .Pro
