UK Right of Registration Ends June 25th
It's been nearly 5 years since Nominet introduced direct domain registrations in .uk. The introduction of .uk was very contentious as I wrote at the time. As part of the rollout the registry decided to give registrants of pre-existing .co.uk domains a pre-emptive right to the equivalent .uk domain name. While other country code registries, such as .nz, opted for shorter … [Read more...] about UK Right of Registration Ends June 25th
WordPress’ Automattic To Launch Dot Blog
When you try to explain new TLDs to non-domain people it's often best to choose a clear example of a domain extension that illustrates the concept of the domain extension itself holding meaning. One of the examples that I and others have used more than once is .blog and the reaction has nearly always been of instant understanding and enlightenment. People "get it". If you're … [Read more...] about WordPress’ Automattic To Launch Dot Blog

In an email to Nominet members yesterday Nominet CEO Russell Haworth stated: We have also taken a decision to make the .UK zone file available free to our members in May. German Registrar Pulls .Uk Domains
Strato (Cronon AG), which is one of the larger German registrars, has pulled *.uk domain names from its offerings. The company made the announcement via a blog post (in German) where they outlined the reasons for their decision. The issue? Nominet's registrant data validation processes. I reached out to the guys at Cronon, who handle domain regisrations for Strato, to get … [Read more...] about German Registrar Pulls .Uk Domains
New Zealand To Get Shorter Domains In September
The New Zealand domain name registry will be launching domain registrations directly under .nz at the end of September. From 1pm on 30 September 2014 it will be possible to register .nz domains. In a similar fashion to how Nominet launched their .uk domains recently, existing holders of .co.nz domains will be given priority rights. However, unlike in the UK, the New … [Read more...] about New Zealand To Get Shorter Domains In September
Welcome to the .uk .. Unless You’re Not in the UK ..
The .uk launch today has been getting quite a bit of press coverage. Getting a big name celebrity like Stephen Fry to endorse the shorter namespace is also a nice win for Nominet. As part of the PR around the launch they've also put out a big welcome sign near Heathrow airport: http://youtu.be/_nRZjZO9gk4 And they did register the domain and put up a minisite … [Read more...] about Welcome to the .uk .. .Uk Launches Tomorrow
Domain name registrations directly under .uk launch tomorrow morning at 0800 London / Dublin time. Nominet, the .uk registry, have put in place a "grandfathering" system to decide who has the right to register a .uk domain name. Essentially if you have an existing .co.uk domain name registered before October 28th 2013 you get first dibs on the matching .uk domain. In fact … [Read more...] about .Uk Launches Tomorrow
Nominet Elections – Big and Small Elected
Nominet's non-executive director elections have been going on for the last few weeks. They have, as usual, been a little controversial, as various parties made accusations against both Nominet, its board, staff and the other candidates (not necessarily in that order and not necessarily by the same people at the same time .. ) This is "normality", though it's not particularly … [Read more...] about Nominet Elections – Big and Small Elected
